On 29 August 2025, Moruleng Stadium in the North West Province played host to the African Traditional Medicine Day Commemoration, a significant event that honoured the critical role of traditional medicine in African healthcare systems. In line with the 2000 World Health Organization (WHO) resolution, the day aimed to promote the integration of indigenous knowledge, herbal practices, and spirituality into formal health systems.
The day began with a 5km health walk and aerobics session, followed by vibrant exhibitions and information-sharing sessions led by Traditional Health Practitioners (THPs) and provincial health institutions. Attendees enjoyed performances by traditional dancers and engaged in walkabouts through exhibition stalls alongside dignitaries and community members.
A key highlight of the event was the keynote address by Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla, who emphasized the need to strengthen the evidence base for traditional medicine and encouraged THPs to register and become formally accredited. Messages of support were delivered by key stakeholders including THP Provincial Chairperson Kenneth Mogoeng, ITHPCSA Chairperson Sheila Mbele, and WHO representative Shenaaz EL-Halabi.
Kgosi Nyalala Pilane reminded attendees of the enduring value of traditional practices and their relevance as South Africa moves into Heritage Month.
The event was attended by provincial leaders, members of the royal family, WHO representatives, and Traditional Health Practitioners from across the country, affirming a collective commitment to preserving, professionalizing, and celebrating Africa’s traditional healing heritage.
