The annual Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela Heritage Celebrations took place on 13–14 September 2025, at the Mphebatho Cultural Museum in Moruleng. Hosted by the Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela, the event aimed to honor and celebrate the community’s rich heritage, culture, and traditions, while promoting the preservation of history for future generations.
Highlights of the programme included a keynote address by Kgosi Nyalala Pilane and messages of support from Kgosi Tshwale and Deputy Chairperson of The North West House of Traditional and Koi-San Leaders - Kgosi Mabalane. The celebrations also featured vibrant performances by cultural dancers and local artists, showcasing the community's talent and cultural pride.
The event was well-attended by members of the Bakgatla royal family, Traditional Council members, local community members, and traditional leaders from Limpopo and North West provinces. A key takeaway from the event was the importance of growing the celebration into an annual platform that empowers the community and stimulates local economic development.
In his address, Kgosi Nyalala Pilane emphasised that “culture is key to building the community, preserving sovereignty, and being proud to be Bakgatla, staying united through all the struggles the community faces.” This message resonated strongly with attendees and underscored the significance of cultural pride and unity.
